trusting

I am back home safely in my studio perched high up in Topanga Canyon. After a month of travel in Panama I am blessed with wonderful photos, a smile on my face, and more life lessons. The night before I departed California to make my way to the Islands of Bocas Del Toro in Panama, I had a strong intuition that I was to roll up six of my Spirit Girls in a yoga mat bag and carry them on my adventure, as if a heavy backpack on my back was not enough!

I somehow just KNEW that those paintings were meant to spread their energy at a gallery on an island. I trusted my strong feeling enough to carry them by planes, buses, taxis, ferries, on foot through rain forests, wooden boats, bicycles and more. The best was crossing the border between Costa Rica and Panama on foot. The 103 year old footbridge spanning across a river had loose boards, gaps with no boards and a beautiful aged well worn patina. So there I was with a backpack strapped to my back and spirit girls hanging on my front .. balancing all the while.

  • Ready to walk the 103 year old well worn footbridge border crossing. The paintings are well protected in my arms leaving Costa Rica entering Panama.

  • “Spirit Girl Martha” hanging beautifully in harmony with all the other artistic treasures at Island Traders in Bocas Town

  • I left “Spirit Girl Deb” peeking out from behind island surf boards!

  • “Spirit Girl Kairos” is hanging behind a handcrafted dream catcher .. of course!

Never did I doubt that they were on their way to exactly the right gallery space on some small island which I knew nothing about.
Well of course… I met Francesca the owner of Island Traders in BocasTown on Isla Colon. The funky little gallery right in the island hustle and bustle now has six Spirit Girls for sale , hanging as if they just belong there… because they do!! Peace, Paula

calypso joe/spirit girl jo

Soon after stepping out of a small simple wooden boat onto a dock in the town of Old Bank on Bastimentos Island, we were greeted by Calypso Joe. Joe was born on this island. He helped us find the only place open for lunch on the island. After we ordered our fish dinners he offered to serenade us till our food arrived.

He asked after 3 or 4 reggae and calypso songs if we liked his music. I said yes. He then responded with: “It may not be my voice, it is because I sing always from my heart” , as he placed his hand over his heart and smiled that bright smile.

I thought to myself that in life isn’t that what makes songs sound sweeter and smiles seem brighter… when they come from the heart ? Calypso Joe is an inspiration for another spirit girl: “Jo”. She has been conceived and her image and message await her canvas back in my studio. What a sweet way to commemorate such a simple connection with such a lovely wise island man.

Peace from the islands,

paula

spirit girl island inspiration

The rain….. Nature’s way of slowing down an already slow pace of life. On this island today it has been raining since daylight. When one relies on only his/her own two bare feet for transportation, life becomes simpler. You puddle jump through the sea level dirt roads, catch a very wet boat ride or….just stay home and thank God for the free drinking water. The rhythms of Life on an island are dictated by Nature….and really isn’t all other life on earth as well ?

Peace, paula

three spirit girls by the sea

Spirit girls Kairos, Paula and ZigZag spread their energy on the beach on Bastimentos Island in Panama.  The beauty of this new art form is that each canvas rolls up around it’s bamboo hanging pole for traveling to her new home. The spirit girls can ship anywhere in a mailing tube safely! I am excited about how well they can travel and sync so well with the bohemian, nomadic habits of the artist…. me!

Namaste,

Paula

spirit girl inspiration in panama

With Five Spirit Girl canvases strapped to my back, I have hunkered down for at least 5 or 6 nights on Bastimentos island off of Panama in the jungle at the edge of the sea. We are at Palmar tent camp which is totally off the grid!! All solar everything and only rainwater.  Our meals are cooked here by a young  & funky staff from UK, US and locals.

Yesterday we went on our own exploring of some very tiny, simple villages, housing a school and a few hut like structures. My Spanish carried us into some simpler conversation with the indigenous people (scary that MY Spanish was our savior!!! ).  I feel right at home in our canvas pole tents!!! The sea is rough and the days humid, rainy and cloudy!! Perfect. Just as it should be!! We are relieved to have taken those HEAVY backpacks off our backs for awhile!!!  Laughing.. Chilling and feeling ever so grateful for this gorgeous universe we inhabit!!

Tomorrow i travel by small boat to another island for a 10:00 am meeting to introduce “Spirit Girls” to a small gallery and a possible home for the ones I brought with me!!

Peace and hugs,

Paula

a spirit girl is born

Spirit Girls”

“What You See Of Me…Is What You Know Of Yourself”

The inspiration for the Spirit Girls came during a personal meditation practice in the wee hours of the morning before daylight. My practice consists of silent meditation, chanting, reading , and journaling. As I sat in candlelight one morning I just KNEW I must paint again. I had not painted in 8 months. I knew it would be something I had never painted before. The “Spirit Girls” were born that day. The inspiration for each original one continues to come from my time at my meditation altar in the wee hours of a new day. Each Spirit Girl has her own name and her own mantra or message placed right over her heart.
